Working with Drug and Alcohol Issues
Many of our clients have struggled with their use of controlled or illicit substances. At Living Well Transitions, we recognize that learning how to manage and address issues in this area is a primary therapeutic task for some of our clients. We assess severity, risk and other factors concerning substance use on a case-by-case basis, and reflect this consideration in each client's transition plan.
Living Well Transitions works with drug and alcohol issues, as they arise for clients, with a persistent and direct approach. With a focus on safety, our treatment team supports clients in reducing the harm from their behaviors with drugs and alcohol, while emphasizing clinical relationships that support clients in redirecting their energies towards more long-term fulfilling activities. A key to success in working with substance issues is to identify and promote healthy habits of self-care. By helping clients identify and connect to their deeper passions, we are then able to help them access appropriate resources in the Boulder area. Utilizing these opportunities enables them to spend time in a healthy and meaningful way, with intentions toward limiting boredom, general dissatisfaction and the urge to use.
We neither endorse nor condone the use of drugs and alcohol. By upholding our clients' dignity and relating to them directly about drug and alcohol issues, we encourage accountability and personal responsibility. Equally important in the ongoing treatment, we use a clinical approach that is neither shaming nor punitive. Clients receive real life feedback from our clinical staff, their social environment and the community. This feedback in the context of independent living helps cultivate in our clients an honest and reasonable appraisal of their behaviors and motivates their intrinsic desire for a healthy and meaningful life.
