Our Philosophy
Central to Living Well Transitions work is the tenet that beneath all one's hopes, fears, difficulties and struggles, we all have within us a kind heart and sane mind. It is through healthy relationships and fulfilling experiences that our basic goodness is discovered time and again.
We believe our role is to provide opportunities for our clients to reconnect with their inherent basic goodness, and promote behaviors that reinforce their natural inclinations to provide for themselves a meaningful, independent life.
The Living Well Transitions program is based on independent living for young adults. Many of our clients were members of residential or behavioral programs during their teens and require additional support; others have simply been unable or unmotivated to make the transition to adulthood. We feel that young adults whom are in need of additional care and support at this age - while their peers have gone on to college, or are now employed - fall into a rut of self-determined helplessness, further stigmatizing them from their peers and the community at large. We believe that the independent living program model fosters self-esteem, allowing our clients to begin their transition to adulthood in a manner that promotes confidence and dignity.
Our program is designed to assist our clients create a healthy and happy life for themselves. We do this by using cognitive methods to teach responsible adult behavior - grocery shopping, budgeting, paying bills, housecleaning - and by using therapeutic methods to create awareness of internalized feelings and external behaviors. Our independent living model provides an opportunity for our clients to transition into adulthood in a real world setting. One can float in water forever with a lifejacket; but does this mean you can really swim?
Our commitment to our clients is to continually notice and call attention to the moments when they demonstrate the goodness and sanity naturally available to them. This requires persistent and diligent attention to our clients, and is enhanced by creating relationships that are based on trust and mutual respect. Accordingly, we abide by the clinical axiom that clients should be neither shamed nor punished for their behaviors, but rather encouraged and supported in their successes. We believe that relating to the natural consequences for one's actions is an important step to adulthood, and assist our clients in managing their emotions during life's inevitable setbacks.
We view each client relationship as clinical and therapeutic in nature. We are committed to being conscious of, and responsive to, the dignity and welfare of our clients at all times. As such, we hold ourselves to the strictest of ethical standards as outlined by state governing boards and professional organizations overseeing the practice of counseling and psychotherapy. Professional ethics govern our actions at all levels of our organization, and primary emphasis is placed on the welfare of our clients in the development and implementation of our business practices.
We believe strongly in actively participating in our local and professional communities. Living Well Transitions is committed to providing opportunities for professional development in the field of psychotherapy, community treatment and counseling. We work with local professional training institutions, overseeing internships and providing staff positions to graduate level students in our field and therapists actively pursuing licensure in the State of Colorado. Living Well Transitions is a member of the Boulder Chamber of Commerce, and maintains professional relationships with local businesses and organizations to maximize opportunities for our staff, clients and the greater community.
