LIVING WELL CLIENTS EXPERIENCE NATURAL HIGH ON COLORADO FOURTEENER
DECEMBER 7, 2010
BOULDER, CO
torrey's peak Three young adult clients at Living Well Transitions, an independent-living therapeutic support program in Boulder, Colorado, reached the 14,267 foot summit of Torrey's Peak on October 16th of this year. The trip began with six clients and three staff members driving from Boulder to the trailhead at 7:00AM. Following a safety talk, gear check, and a bagel sandwich, the team embarked up the trail towards the saddle between Grays and Torreys Peaks. After 30 minutes of hiking, three of the clients and one staff wisely turned back owing to old injuries flaring up and a bout of altitude sickness. They were able to enjoy a lakeside day in historic Georgetown, Colorado, awaiting the return of the summit party.

The team summited around 1:00PM and spent about 30 minutes on the summit. "I'm from Connecticut, and this is definitely the highest I have ever been in my life,"reported one of the two clients for whom this hike was their first trip up to above fourteen thousand feet.

All six clients who attempted the hike had committed to an 8 week fitness regimen to adequately prepare them for the hike. Zach Weinzetl, a Life Skills Counselor and organizer of this hike, oversaw the client's training in town and helped motivate the group in the run up to the hike. "The clients who came on this hike met their fitness goals in the frontcountry and were rewarded by an incredible hike, glorious weather, and a powerful experience. I am so psyched to be able to be with these clients as they discover the strength needed to climb this mountain and bring that into the other challenges they face in their daily life."
